Supplement Secrets To Radiant Skin

supplments for better skin

With spring/summer comes skin and lots of it! So what is a girl to do besides skin brush her skin cells off to keep both her face and body looking glowing and beautiful? A few supplement ideas:

Take a daily probiotic
The GI tract and skin are both organs of detoxification. We need a healthy microbiome in the gut to break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate toxins. When our gut flora is not healthy, and there are more bad bacteria than good bacteria, a lot of problems can arise — including chronic inflammation, which is a cause of acne and other skin problems. Some bad bacteria, fungus, and yeast can even cause inflammation in and of themselves. So, if you are looking to clear up your skin, you have to start with your gut. You can read more about probiotics here.

Products I like: Cocobiotic and/or Bio-K (I buy it from Whole Foods – it’s in the fridge section where the vitamins and supplements are)

Collagen
Collagen is a long-chain amino acid and the most abundant protein in the body. It’s what’s responsible for giving skin elasticity, hair its strength, and connective tissue its ability to hold everything in place. In fact, the collagen protein makes up 30% of the total protein in the body, and 70% of the protein in the skin! The body’s natural collagen production declines with age and many modern lifestyle factors (like stress, poor diet, gut health imbalances, etc.) can also decrease the body’s ability to make it. Taking a supplement has been proven to have major skin benefits like keeping the skin supple and preventing onset premature aging.

Products I like: Beauty Chef’s Collagen Inner Beauty Boost (I currently take this), Great Lakes Gelatin (before starting Beauty Chef’s collagen I added a scoop of this to my morning smoothies – it’s pretty much flavorless that way) and/or Bone Broth

Acai
Before you go to buy ingredients for your next batch of smoothies, consider this: acai berries are full of antioxidants known to be an aging beauty’s partner in crime. It’s rich in vitamins A, B, C, and E so it’s going to revive your skin, heal damaged skin cells, and restore moisture. Add it in powder form or frozen to your next smoothie for all the benefits.

Products I like: Navitas Organics Acai Powder and/or Sambazon Smoothie Packs (I buy them in the frozen food section at Whole Foods, they look like this)

Flaxseed oil
Omega-rich supplements flaxseed oil, taken regularly, can really help maintain the moisture in your skin. Eating flaxseed, chia, walnuts, and other omega-packed seeds and nuts, or oily fish and eggs can do the same.

Product I like: Barlean’s Fresh Flax Oil 100% Organic

Fish oil
The fatty acids in fish oil supply hydration to your skin and help with inflammation AND one supplement a day can help reduce acne and wards off wrinkles. Yes, please!

Product I like: Omega Cure
